Talking to gun owners for Obama in Northern Minnesota

Ray Schoenke
By Ray Schoenke at October 18, 2008 - 2:00pm

I'm back home for a day before I head back out on the road.  Wanted to get up a post about my trip to Minnesota.  I was heading there to speak to hunters about Obama, mainly because Todd Palin was going to be there doing the same thing for his side.

On my way to Minnesota, who did I see at the Detroit airport?  Todd Palin.  Did I go talk introduce myself to him?  You betcha.  I want him to know that his side doesn't have the exclusive on talking to gun owners this year.

Most of the articles about Todd mentioned the gun owners who support Obama, too.  That's exactly what we wanted.

The reaction in Northern Minnesota was very positive.

I did several stops, met with sportsmen for Obama and did quite a few t.v,, newspaper and radio interviews.   I had a good talk with the Bemidji Pioneer.  and had to love the headline, "American Hunters and Shooters Association founder: Obama will protect gun rights."

Little did I know when I started AHSA a couple years ago, that we'd have a headline in the Bemidji Pioneer.  I'm going to excerpt part of the article because, to be honest, it reads just like what I've been writing in my diaries here at Daily Kos:

Schoenke said his AHSA is an alternative to the NRA for "gun rights, respect of the rights, that every law-abiding citizen can own a gun, but with those rights come civic responsibilities, and a huge commitment to land and conservation of our natural resources."

The NRA is totally lacking on policy for land conservation, he said.

"The NRA, in order to win this battle, in order to get McCain (elected), they want to scare, frighten gun owners into believing Obama is going to take away your guns," he said. "That dog doesn't hunt."

While the McCain campaign points out Obama's record "with a microscope," Schoenke said the same could be true about McCain. He cited the NRA's listing of McCain as "Enemy No. 1" in 2001 for his support of background checks at gun shows.

"McCain and the NRA were at each other's throats," he said. "When the McCain-Feingold (campaign finance reform) bill came out, they were adamantly against him."

The NRA, meanwhile, likes to label the AHSA as "the enemy in camouflage."

"But what the hell are they? Unless you're a conservative right winger, you cannot own a gun?" Schoenke asks. "Of course, Democrats own guns. Moderates own guns."

Schoenke said AHSA "doesn't believe in unfettered, unimpeded, unregulated access to guns. We believe that only law-abiding citizens should have the right to own a gun, and with that right goes civic responsibility, which means we don't want terrorists and criminals and people who harm themselves get guns. We want to do everything we can to make sure that doesn't happen."

The group also has a "huge commitment to conservation, which really separates us from the NRA, as the NRA is horrible when it comes to conservation issues," he said. "They're a one-issue organization. They're all gun rights."

The NRA claims to represent all 80 million gun owners in the U.S., but Schoenke said there is a wide gap between gun-banners and the NRA's wide open stance, and that gun owners wanted an alternative to the NRA.

"The gun rights issue is behind us and conservation is important," he said. "Obama is ahead of McCain, and I think he's clearly ahead when it comes to the economy. That's why I strongly urge hunters and shooters throughout Minnesota to look to Obama and support him."

I have a good feeling a lot of hunters and shooters in Minnesota will be supporting Obama.

I'm heading to Ohio this week for more campaigning.  Just over two weeks to go - none of us can let up.  And, I'll say what I've said before:  Obama is talking to gun owners - and they're listening.

I greatly appreciate your stand for those gun owners who do not fit under the NRA "demographic"...I have owned-and still own-a number of guns since I was a young man (about 46 years) and I have long been bothered with the assumption that I, by this fact of ownership, buy 100% into the NRA stance. I belonged to the NRA for a while, but found that their position was unrealistic in my view.
Keep up the good work, I will be joining your organization!
An Obama-supporting, life-long gun owner.

I happen to own 33 acers of pure woods.
and last hunting season some one whot my dog.............
We dont allow hunting for this reason.

I disagree with you about obama's position and control over gun rights, he can take our rights away. I heard you on Ed Shults show today say that Obama could not amend the constitution as president, witch is true. My concern would be his far left apointee's to the supreme court that would misinterprit the constitution as four of them did concerning the DC handgun ban, thanks to the other five the ban was lifted.

Obama stated after the supreme court decision and the hand gun ban was lifted, that he was diusapointed in that decision.

I wish these justices would define the constitution as it was writtin and not reinterprit it to fit thier political views.

It's about time! I heard about you on Ed Schultz. I'm a gun-owner for Obama. I was a gun-owner for Kerry previously. I even made up my own sign to put in my car to that effect during the last election. I pulled into a Cabela's store parking lot in October, 2004 to find dozens of guys passing out Bush literature. I refused it and pointed to my sign. I got booed, but no damage to my car! (Maybe they were afraid I had a concealed carry permit?) This year I'm not so sure I'd be so lucky.

I'm originally from SE Ohio, for the most part very conservative politically, and poor, but a beautiful place--wonderful for hunting and fishing. My dad was an NRA member until he died, but I always thought the NRA was unreasonable. I love my guns, but a few reasonable restrictions are fine with me. THANK YOU for doing this. I'm gonna go make me a new sign for my car...

I just learned about your organization today. As a member of the NRA, I find your articles refreshing and stirring, especially concerning Senator Obama's stand on gun issues. I am tired of receiving weekly solicitations from the NRA, always asking for more and more money, and their continuous and mostly false accusations against the Senator.
While I am a life long gun owner, reloader, trap, skeet and target shooter, and I strongly support our 2nd Amendment rights, it is my opinion that the NRA has become so political they have lost sight of their original agenda and goals. I do have to admit, I enjoy 90% of the "American Rifleman" magazine and will miss the gun articles. I say "miss", because I will not renew my NRA membership in 2010, and am seriously considering joining your organization.
I totally agree that law abiding citizens should have the right to own handguns, rifles and shotguns for personal and defensive use, at a reasonable price for the weapon and ammunition, and official verification of my personal acceptable status to buy these items does not bother me. To coin the old phrase, "When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns". Amen.

I just listened to you on the Ed Schultz Show, and you made some great points. I remember when the Republicans were screaming that Bill Clinton was going to take away our guns if he was elected President.
Yet, during eight years of Clinton's presidency, no one I know had a single gun taken from them. This is simply a scare tactic to push their agenda.
If the NRA genuinly cared about hunters, you would think it would support conservation issues. After all, if we lose our natural resources, where are we going to hunt? Not too much wildlife can be found roaming around an oil rig.
Keep up the great work, and let's help Obama get elected. I'm forwarding your website to all my hunting and fishing friends.

I just heard you on the Ed Schultz show and have sent your web site address to my 2 sons-in-law.

Thank you for getting the truth out about Obama.
And thank you for your conservation ethic.

SC Martin

I am from Northern MN and I also saw Todd Palin - Northern Mn is a DFL strong hold and gun rights will never overcome voting the party line (until we lose our guns)- By the way I must assume that you wouldn't have supported Clinton as hunters lost a lot of hunting land access during his administration -

Anyway, following your train of thought - What good is hunting land if you don't have a gun? I did not rely on the NRA to inform me of Obama's record - I did the research on my own - Obviously, you didn't do your homework when deciding to support him because anyone looking at his voting record would have to be brain dead to think he is a supporter of second ammendment rights - Thus I have to believe the Obama support is due to a hidden agenda of your organization - If your interest lies with the conservation agenda then good for you and focus on that - However your forays into negative NRA issues only further supports my belief that you are not what you say you are - Hmmmmm lets see what my research digs up on you.

Thank you for all of your honest reporting of the facts and your faithful representation of sportsmen everywhere!

So Obama's record means nothing to you guys?

I am potentially interested in an organization like this as I am an anti-NRA hunter, but am suspicious as there is no "contact us" page and I see no benefit to membership beyond the fact that the "group" (which does not seem to be wide) like me believes that the NRA agenda is too radical. Send me an e-mail from a real person and I'll consider joining.

Recently, Obama seems to be saying that the 2nd Ammendment is an individual right, and that citizens have the right to own guns and use them for self defense.

That's great - if it's truly how he would make policy.

My concern is this - how does he reconcile the above position with his historical support for the Chicago and Washington DC gun-ownership prohibitions? In both cities, it is my understanding that not only is it illegal to own a sidearm for self-protection, you can't even use a gun in YOUR OWN HOME for self defense.

If you are truly in accord with the founders comments about the rights of citizens to own guns for defense of self and country, how can you disregard Obama's record of support for extreme gun control measures like these?

I've been an active hunter my entire life and an even more active defender of the true meaning of the second amemdment having to do with the right of the people to be able to defend themselves from their government. As you might imagine, I was dumbfounded to learn that an organization, The American Hunters and Shoters Assciation, that claims to represent gun owners would endorse Barak Obama given his history of opposition to the right of self defense and the right to ber arms. We learned about Obama's position on guns when he traveled all over our state during the NH Primary and his history of opposition became quite clear then.

Recently I came across Mr Richard Pearson's take on Obama. Pearson is the Executive Director of the Illinois State Rifle Association. I've attached Pearson's remarks for you here. He certainly thinks you folks have it all wrong. So do I. Maybe your membership will reconsider the organizations ill considered support of this presidential candidate once they read Pearson's remarks.

Dedicated to education, safety training and support
of Illinois firearm owners

October 10, 2008

Fellow Sportsman,

Hello, my name is Rich Pearson and I have been active in the firearm rights movement for over 40 years. For the past 15 years, I have served in the Illinois state capitol as the chief lobbyist for the Illinois State Rifle
Association.

I lobbied Barack Obama extensively while he was an Illinois State Senator. As a result of that experience, I know Obama’s attitudes toward guns and gun owners better than anyone. The truth be told, in all my years in the Capitol I have never met a legislator who harbors more contempt for the law-abiding firearm owner than Barack Obama.

Although Obama claims to be an advocate for the 2nd Amendment, his voting record in the Illinois Senate paints a very different picture. While a state senator, Obama voted for a bill that would ban nearly every hunting rifle, shotgun and target rifle owned by Illinois citizens. That same bill would authorize the state police to raid homes of gun owners and forcibly confiscate banned guns. Obama supported a bill that would shut down law-abiding firearm manufacturers including Springfield Armory, Armalite, Rock River Arms and Les Baer. Obama also voted for a bill that would prohibit law-abiding citizens from purchasing more than one gun per month.

Without a doubt, Barack Obama has proven himself to be an enemy of the law abiding firearm owner. At the same time, Obama has proven himself to be a friend to the hardened criminal. While a state senator, Obama voted 4 times against legislation that would allow a homeowner to use a firearm in defense of home and family.

Does Barack Obama still sound to you like a “friend” of the law-abiding gun owner?

And speaking of friends, you can always tell a person by the company they keep. Obama counts among his friends the Rev. Michael Pfleger - a renegade Chicago priest who has openly called for the murder of gun shop owners and pro-gun legislators. Then there is his buddy Richard Daley, the mayor of Chicago who has declared that if it were up to him, nobody would be allowed to own a gun. And let’s not forget Obama’s pal George Soros - the guy who has pumped millions of dollars into the UN’s international effort to disarm law-abiding citizens.

Obama has shown that he is more than willing to use other people’s money to fund his campaign to take your guns away from you. While a board member of the leftist Joyce Foundation, Barack Obama wrote checks for tens of millions of dollars to extremist gun control organizations such as the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence and the Violence Policy Center.

Does Barack Obama still sound to you like a “friend” of the law-abiding gun owner?

By now, I’m sure that many of you have received mailings from an organization called “American Hunters and Shooters Association(AHSA)” talking about what a swell fellow Obama is and how he honors the 2nd Amendment and how you will never have to worry about Obama coming to take your guns. Let me make it
perfectly clear - everything the AHSA says about Obama is pure hogwash. The AHSA is headed by a group of left-wing elitists who subscribe to the British view of hunting and shooting. That is, a state of affairs where hunting and shooting are reserved for the wealthy upper-crust who can afford guided hunts on exclusive private reserves. The AHSA is not your friend, never will be.

In closing, I’d like to remind you that I’m a guy who has actually gone nose to nose with Obama on gun rights issues. The Obama I know cannot even begin to identify with this nation’s outdoor traditions. The Obama I know sees you, the law abiding gun owner, as nothing but a low-class lummox who is easily swayed by the flash of a smile and a ration of rosy rhetoric. The Obama I know is a stony-faced liar who has honed his skill at getting what he wants - so long as people are willing to give it to him.

That’s the Barack Obama I know.

Sincerely,
(original signed)

Open Letter to Sportsmen:10/10/08:page 2

I really cant believe that you agree with regulating the .50bmg. The 2nd ammendment covers all weapons not just the ones you think are for hunting or self defense. You probably never have or never will own any class III weapon at all and think that they are scary. In addition Obama has about the worse record on the 2nd ammendment there is. The only worse is Sen Bidden which originally wrote the AWB of 1994 that Sen Feinstein had to add to and submit. We all know that Sen Bidden will get another AWB in which will only raise the prices of magazines and rifles. You should just shut down this website and find something else to do with your time. I am sure that this will be deleted because the truth hurts.

Modern .50 caliber BMG sniper rifles possess no reasonable utility for hunting or self-defense.

This avid waterfowl hunter is an avid Obama supporter, as is my husband. Way to represent us NON NRA'ers who love our guns and our sport but don't love the Republican fear-mongering and hate-filled rhetoric. Thanks, from Minnesota :)

Thank God for Jesse Ventura.

Ray; I still can not believe that you are backing such a socialist. He has been one of the biggest backers of gun control there is. His pretty speech hides what he really stands for and has you and almost half of the population fooled. He is bad for this country and I hope that some of these people wake up before Nov. 4th

hey how can a person contact you?

the page link does not work...

please email me

You people need to be exposed for the socialist that you are. You should not even be allowed to use the word "hunters" in your title. For you to endorse Obama is an absolute shame and disgrace. Just so you know, I am doing everything I can (along with my other hunting friends) to expose you for what you really are!

Sincerely,
PISSED!
