These last two posts are great, especially about myopia of the industry. I agree that racism is defintely a factor. I think it is great there are efforts to recruit more hunters/anglers of color.
Isn't there also an economic and geographic reality here as well ? African-Americans are poorer and more urban than the white population. Of course racism is at work in this, too, at least the income issue. But, hunting is an activity that takes some resources if you live in an urban area, since you need to travel and have the money to buy hunting equipment, the cost can be significant when you are just getting started. Also, urban people generally are less likely to hunt than rural, this statistic is true internationally.
